Movie screening

EXPIRED! Ran from 2/14/2018 thru 2/16/2018

Although the 15th Amendment granted African-American men the right to vote in 1870, local officials in many areas maintained policies, such as poll taxes, literacy tests and carried out acts of intimidation and violence, that denied people this civil right. Unable to vote, African-Americans, especially in the South, were not able to elect officials to represent their interests or create change. It wasn’t until the Voting Rights Act of 1965 that these discriminatory practices were finally ended through federal legislation and enforcement. One of the pivotal moments leading to this historical legislation was the protest march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. On Friday, February 23rd, students and staff are invited to watch Selma, the historical drama that portrays these events. The movie will run from 3:15-5:15 in the Little Theater with refreshments before in the Library Media Center.
