126th St. Road construction will affect routes to schools

Release Date: July 18th, 2011

The construction work being done on 126th St around the Promise Road and Hoosier Road areas will have a very significant impact on the transportation of students at Fishers High School, Sand Creek Intermediate and to a lesser extent, Sand Creek Elementary.

126th St will be closed from the entrance to Whispering Woods and Somerset (1/3 mile east of Hoosier Rd.) to the small bridge over Sand Creek (approximately 250 yards west of Promise Rd.). This construction is expected to last through November.

Billericay Park, Geist Christian Church, Promise Road Business Park and U-Stor may be accessed from Promise Road throughout the construction. Life Christian Church and the homes along 126th St. (east of the bridge) can be accessed on 126th St. from the east. Sumerlin Trails may be accessed off Hoosier Road from the south only. During this construction, Hoosier Rd. will be closed north of Sumerlin Trails and ultimately will be straightened as it approaches 126th St.

As far as school bus transportation is concerned, we will not be able to pick up or drop off any students on 126th St. between Cumberland Rd. and the Oak Hall subdivision during this time. Any student east of the I-69 bridge can be picked up and dropped off at Raiders Blvd. and Bills Ave in the Bristols. Those students between Promise Rd. and Cumberland Rd. will be picked up and dropped off at Commonwealth Dr. and Lockerbie Ln. in Britton Ridge. The times will be available approximately one week prior to the start of school.

Those students living in Somerset, Oak Hall, Meadow Brook Village, Estates of Meadowbrook, Rolling Knoll, Sumerlin Trails, Tamarisk and parts of Sandstone (north of 116th St.) may experience longer than normal bus rides to and from FJH and SCI due to the detour and traffic congestion. This will be especially true during the morning commute. For students at FHS, there is no access to the school from 126th St. so most all traffic will be arriving in the morning from the west along 131st St. or from the north on Promise Rd. Not only will most all cars being traveling along these two routes, so will 30 to 40 buses, all converging on the intersection at 131st St. and Promise Rd. around the same time. Students will continue to have access into Billericay Park, if necessary, but still must pass through this intersection. Students who can arrive via Marilyn Rd. and westbound 131st St. will have easy access into the parking the lot adjacent to the soccer fields.

Anyone traveling in this section of town should plan for a much longer commute between 7 and 8 a.m. Students should either devote time to planning their trip to school prior to the first day or board their neighborhood bus. Keep in mind that if a school bus is delayed for traffic, for whatever the reason, the students are never considered late to school.
