FJH Orchestra Students attend concert of world-renowned cellist Yo Yo MA
May 10th, 2012
Many Fishers Junior High Orchestra members attended a performance by world-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma in at the Palladium April 30. The Palladium certainly looked how most described it, very well designed and detailed. Ma’s performance was actually along with Kathryn Stott (piano), Odair & Sergio Assad(guitar), and Joseph Gramley (percussion) in a series of both interesting and thrilling Brazilian themed songs, including Oblivion, Cristal, and Amparo. “Brazilian” music turned out to be a very diverse type of music, including both deep and morose songs of loneliness to bright and fiery songs that have both the audience and the performers flying, and was certainly worth the two encores they played. Throughout the whole concert, Ma appeared very “down to earth” pointing for recognition for each of the other performers rather than himself.
Seeing him in concert made many of us who went notice more of what our form should look like as string instrumentalists, including how he moved with the music and seemed to merge himself with it. For both those of us who play cello and perhaps piano or guitar, as well as those who play other instruments in the orchestra, the experience was very enjoyable and gave us new heights to work to reach beyond that of our school activities in the orchestra.
