6th Grade Parent Information Night – 7th Grade “Double-Up” Advanced Science
March 21st, 2012
Students who have achieved a letter grade of “B-” in 6th grade Enriched Science and a “B” or better in 2-Year Advanced Math are eligible to enroll in both 7th grade and 8th grade Advanced Science during their 7th grade year. Although students may qualify for the advanced science course of study, the program is not necessarily the appropriate choice for all. The intent of this “doubling up” strategy is to prepare students to take Honors Biology during their 8th grade year. Reasons for pursuing this rigorous course of study may include advanced aptitude and interest in science, early preparation for the Senior Academy opportunity, and/or the desire to take additional science courses over five years prior to graduation.
Parents and students may have questions regarding the strategy of "doubling up" in science, the content of these advanced science courses, and the challenges associated with taking such an advanced course of study in junior high. An information session was held on March 19, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. in the Riverside Junior High School gymnasium where a panel of teachers, guidance counselors, and administrators were present to provide important information about the advanced science program.
Information can be accessed through the below meeting PowerPoint, the parent letter or contacting the appropriate junior high school principal or guidance counselor.
