Buchman, Benner Named Honorary Foundation Chairs

Release Date: October 6th, 2011

Local celebrities Angela Buchman and Bill Benner have been named as honorary chairs for the Hamilton Southeastern Schools Foundation (HSSF) year-long tenth anniversary celebration. The celebration, which officially launched last month at the rival Hamilton Southeastern High School vs. Fishers High School football game, recognizes the vital role the HSSF plays in providing student scholarships and teacher grants to the schools within the Hamilton Southeastern District.

“The entire community has been so supportive of the Foundation over the past ten years,” comments HSSF president Tim Calvert, “we are excited to recognize their support and involve more families in our mission to further enhance the educational experience students receive at every Hamilton Southeastern school. Having support for this initiative from Angela and Bill is quite an honor.”

An Indiana native, Buchman is best known for her accuracy and reliability. She graduated from Hamilton Southeastern High School and began her career at WLFI TV18 in Lafayette, IN, before returning to Indianapolis as a meteorologist with WISH-TV. Buchman is a member of the American Meteorological Society and holds her AMS Seal of Approval. The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has awarded her two Emmys for Best Weathercaster.

A lifelong Hoosier and founding member of the HSSF, Benner joined the sports staff of The Indianapolis Star in June of 1968 and became a full-time sportswriter in June of 1971. Benner won numerous awards for his writing during his newspaper career and was twice recognized as the Indiana Sportswriter of the Year by the National Association of Sportswriters and Sportscasters (NSSA). Benner is currently the senior associate commissioner for external affairs for the Horizon League, an NCAA Division I conference headquartered in Indianapolis.

Several events are scheduled throughout the year in honor of the 10-year anniversary, including the Dollars for Scholars student fund-raising telethon in February, a community fund raising dinner in March, and a golf outing in June. New this year is the 10 for 10 campaign, aimed at encouraging district parents and supporters to donate $10 to the HSSF. “If each Hamilton Southeastern family would donate $10 to the Foundation, our base of dollars available for teacher grants and student scholarships would be solidly in place for years to come,” says Calvert.
