SCI students experience Skype visit with book’s author

Sand Creek Intermediate students in Laura Christie’s class had an unexpected and unique experience as part of their study of the novel called Powerless by Matthew Cody.

Back in November they read the fairly new novel and then visited Matthew Cody's official website http://matthewcody.com/ to learn more about him because students were impressed with his writing style. “We learned that this was his first novel. He had email contact information available so I challenged my class to send him email messages,” said Christie. “Ten of my students sent him messages, all with different questions and compliments of his writing.”

He wrote each one back. It was at that time that Christie contacted him to thank him for impacting and increasing the passion for reading and writing in her students. Right before break he wrote her back offering to Skype with her classes for free. “My kids had a question-creating contest leading up to our session so the best 10 questions were used in each session,” she explained. He visited through Skype with two different language arts blocks. “Matthew Cody was so giving of his time and tips for writing!” Christie said.
