The GQE tests Grade 9 English/language arts (E/LA) standards, K - 8 mathematics standards,
and Algebra I standards.
Indiana high school graduates must meet the GQE requirement in addition to earning the
credits required to qualify for an Indiana high school diploma.
The GQE was part of Public Law 19, enacted by the Indiana General Assembly in 1992 as a
response to concerns expressed by parents, employers, and the higher education community that
some graduates were leaving high school without the skills necessary to succeed in the workforce
and in postsecondary education. The GQE helps ensure that your son or daughter has mastered
essential skills in reading, writing (K-9 E/LA standards), and mathematics (K-8 and Algebra
I standards).
