Preschool

Our Program

Kids in cornfield

• Designed for children ages 3-5 years

• Days filled with the hands-on study of the natural sciences

• Curriculum Framework is based on the integration of the Indiana Academic Foundation Standards for Early Literacy and Early Mathematical Practice

The Preschool of the Natural Sciences for HSE Schools is based on the belief that children are naturally curious and eager to learn. This is a critical period of time for our youngest learners and an opportunity for our schools to support and push the growth of their cognitive development. This is accomplished by marrying authentic and thoughtful project work in the natural sciences areas with foundational academic skills. Our learners deserve a quality preschool experience in a school learning community that values, enhances, promotes and respects the intellectual and social-emotional growth of young children.

Our Learning

Kids in cornfield

Our children will find meaning in what they do both at and outside of school, with site visit work in our community. Leaving preschool each day with new vocabulary, a heightened sense of curiosity, persistence to problem solve, cooperative play skills, and excited to communicate their new learning.

The role of the teacher in our preschools is to facilitate and pose questions designed to support the natural curiosity in each child, scaffolding their learning of new vocabulary and foundational academic skills in authentic ways using hands on project work in the natural science areas. Project work that includes the integration of traditional academic skills feeds children’s cognitive development. Developing the thinking, questioning, and investigation skills to be ready to enter kindergarten as independent and confident learners.

Our Inclusivity

Kids in preschool

Hamilton Southeastern Schools believes in the power of diversity and all students learning together for PreK-12. Children learn from one another and have individual strengths. We believe in the importance of offering a continuum of services for students with exceptional needs. Students who have or may need an individual education plan (IEP) are provided services within our preschool program. Individual needs and services are determined at case conferences through a partnership between the school and the family.

Hamilton Southeastern Schools place students with individual education plans in a preschool setting that is balanced with both students with individual education plans (IEP's) and typically developing peers.

Our Families

Child Closeup

HSE Preschool families are invited to participate in all school activities, information nights, and parent teacher organization (PTO) events. Parents and families are welcome to volunteer and support our preschool students. After you enroll and meet your teacher please ask how you can assist in the classroom and look for communication from Skyward about school events and meetings. We value a strong parent and family connection at HSE!

In order to participate and volunteer in school events all participants need to have the appropriate background checks in place. Please click on the link below to get started with the process and we look forward to seeing you at HSE!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Preschool Program?

The HSE Preschool of the Natural Sciences is designed to engage children ages 3 – 5 (not kindergarten age eligible) and includes both students with exceptional needs and typically developing peers. Eligibility for services is determined by our Preschool Assessment Team (PAT). This multidisciplinary team conducts an educational evaluation for those students in need of services. Our continuum of services include, but are not limited to, speech/language therapy, physical therapy, and/or occupational therapy. Evaluation is NOT required for all students, only those whose parents/guardians are seeking further information.

Where are the classes held?

HSE Preschool classes are held at Brooks School Elementary (8 classrooms) and Sand Creek Elementary (2 classrooms). Student age, home school, location of childcare, and parent choice will always be taken into consideration prior to placing students in preschool locations.

What time and days do students attend?

We are now Monday-Friday. Classes are 8:30-11:30 and 12:30-3:30.

Is transportation provided to and from school?

Children who enroll in the preschool program and are receiving special education services may elect to receive transportation services to and from school. The location of the child's residence and/or the location of childcare are considered when determining placement within a preschool location. Transportation may be provided to childcare locations that are within the Hamilton Southeastern School Corporation boundaries. The location of the childcare may determine the building site at which the child attends.

Transportation is NOT available for typically developing peers.

Please be aware that any special education students who register BEFORE August 1st, 2017 will begin school with transportation on August 14th. Those who register AFTER August 1st, 2017 will begin school with transportation on August 21st.

Does my child need a speech screening?

The Preschool's Speech Therapists provide Speech Screenings twice a month. If you have concerns with your child’s speech sound or language development, contact the HSE Preschool Office for more information. This brief assessment will provide enough information to know whether further evaluation is warranted or if your child’s communication errors are typical for his/her age.

What if I have developmental concerns?

If you have developmental concerns (this may include communication, social/emotional, cognitive, physical etc.) about your child between the ages of 3-5 years of age, contact us and the HSE Preschool secretary will forward your concern to the proper school personnel.

HSE offers a continuum of preschool services that include: community preschool placements, developmental preschool placements and walking speech services. A child’s developmental, educational and social emotional needs are considered by the case conference committee when determining the appropriate placement in the least restrictive environment. Curriculum, goals, objectives and thematic units of study are designed to align to the Indiana State Standards for preschool.
